Why Practising Hard for Math Will Not Help Your Child Get A*

Dear Parent,

Growing up we’ve always been told to study hard, right?

When it comes to Mathematics...

We were told to “practise hard” if we want an A, remember?

Unfortunately, that is not the solution.

If you want your primary school child to excel in Math…

Without practising hard (and blindly)

Without stressing themselves (and stressing YOU out)

Read on and in the next 2 minutes you will find out how.

Who am I?

I’m Kelvin, founder of EzyMath Studio, a Math tuition centre in Singapore with 2 branches.

You see…

Watching students realize their highest potential is one of the greatest feelings for me as a tutor.

But when I first started teaching many years ago, things weren’t always smooth.

I noticed that in some classes, no matter how hard some students practise...

And how much additional resources I gave them to work on...

They still couldn’t get their As.

Some even constantly got Cs.

So I thought to myself:

“Something must be wrong somewhere. What could it be?

If the problem lies with my teaching, then why do more than 50% of my students can get A/A* for their PSLE Math exams?

The problem couldn’t be the kids too since they have been practising hard.”

I thought long & hard…

I spoke with many students, parents and even school teachers...

To understand deeper how kids think and function.

And I finally found out why.

There are 2 main reasons why students don’t do well in Math.

(Even if they practise super hard or attend expensive math enrichment programs.)

Reason #1:

The root cause when a child doesn’t do well in math is because they don’t understand what the question is looking for.

It also means they don’t know the concepts needed to answer it.

That’s why no matter how hard they memorize or practise, the moment the style of the question changes, they get stuck finding the answer.

Reason #2:

In a class of students, everyone has a different learning pace.

Some learn faster than others.

That’s why you hear cases of parents sending their child for expensive math enrichment classes…

only to pull out because their kids don’t benefit from them.

When I discovered those 2 reasons…

The light bulb in my brain suddenly came on.

I immediately sat down at my desk, took out all my teaching materials…

And recreated them in a way that will make concepts easy to understand for our students.

This is a preview of my “Secret Document” which I use to make learning concepts easy.

I sum up concepts of Whole Numbers, Fractions and Ratio in an easy-to-understand way.

Instead of getting students to just practise hard, they now learn to identify what a question is looking for, and what concepts to use to answer them.

Let me show you how to breakdown a question and understand it easily:

(The video is 13 minutes long, but if you watch the first 2 minutes, you can see how I identify the patterns in a topic)

Most importantly, because different students have different learning pace and needs.

We implemented a differentiated learning program at EzyMath Studio.

This means students of different learning pace will be separated into a class that is of similar pace and needs.

C. A. Tomlinson, an expert on the topic of differentiated instruction whose research is well known worldwide, explained that students in the same age differ in their readiness to learn and have different learning needs.

She also said:

“Differences in students are significant enough to make a major impact on what students need to learn, the pace at which they need to learn it, and the support they need from teachers and others to learn it well.”

Therefore here at EzyMath, we give differentiated instruction and support to our students.

Students who are weaker at math will get more support on understanding concepts and foundations.

Students who are stronger will get to tackle more challenging questions as well as train on their speed.

No one student gets left behind.

We help your child realize his/her fullest potential.

When differentiated learning programs were implemented at EzyMath studio…

Parents and students loved it.

Besides seeing a huge improvement in their grade...

They enjoyed learning at a comfortable pace too.

A mother texted this to me recently and it really warmed my heart.

So you see...

Practising hard is not the solution to doing well.

Especially if your child has not fully grasped the concept of a topic properly.

Once they know how to break down a question easily to know what it’s looking for…

At the same time get proper guidance in the right learning environment...

Getting that A* is definitely possible.

As parents, we want the best for our child.

Yet, we don’t want them to get additional stress.

On exam day, you want them to walk into the classroom/hall confidently...

And think to themselves:

“I am calm, confident and ready for this paper.”

Imagine this:

You no longer have to stress over your kid’s homework…

And wonder whether they will be able “make it” or not.

You or your spouse don’t have to crack your brains over teaching them their difficult problem sums…

If you want your child to gain confidence and do well in Math...

And you want to be a stress-free and worry-free parent…
